Resident of Chechnya convicted of policeman's false denunciation

Rasul Madagov, an elderly resident of Chechnya, has complained about the policeman who hit him, but investigators found no signs of a crime in policeman's actions and accused Madagov of a false denunciation. The court sentenced Madagov to corrective labour conditionally.

A court in Grozny found Rasul Madagov guilty of deliberately false denunciation after he accused a policeman of violence, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has reported.

It follows from the ruling of the Visaitovsky District Court of Grozny that the district policeman had noticed Madagov smoking at the store and drew up a protocol on violation of the ban on smoking in public places. On the same day, Madagov "in retaliation" turned to the investigating authority, stating that the district policeman "had hit him in the face." The ruling states that with his statement, Madagov "distracted the forces and attention of the preliminary investigating body from the fight against real crimes" and "violated the interests" of the district policeman, in respect of whom the pre-investigation check was conducted.

The defendant's remorse and his elderly age were recognized as mitigating circumstances.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) recognized the violation of the rights of Suleiman Edigov, a native of Chechnya, who claimed torture, in connection with which the Russia's Supreme Court (SC) decided to resume the proceedings on the case.
