Chechen native Khumaid Khaidaev stops his hunger strike in SIZO

Khumaid Khaidaev, a native of Chechnya, accused in a case on a riot in a penal colony in Angarsk, stopped his hunger strike in a SIZO (pre-trial prison), which he declared in protest against discrimination on religious grounds.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that another person involved in the riot case was on hunger strike together with Khumaid Khaidaev.

Prisoners in the SIZO in Irkutsk, including Khumaid Khaidaev, stopped their hunger strike, after issues of infringement of their religious rights were resolved, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reports.

According to the human rights defenders’ information, relatives of those arrested received a letter informing them that the hunger strike had been stopped. The human rights defenders claim that the SIZO administration turned off the heating in the cells during the day, and the heating during the night was not enough to warm up the cells. Now the cells have become warmer, the “Chechens, Diaspora, Europe” Telegram channel reports.

Let us remind you that on April 16, 2020, the human rights defenders claimed that Khumaid Khaidaev was subjected to severe torture after a prisoner riot in the penal colony in Angarsk. On June 8, 2022, in Irkutsk, a court recognized the investigators’ refusal to institute a case on torture of Khumaid Khaidaev as legal.
