Rights defenders claim torture of prisoner from Chechnya

Khumaid Khaidaev, a native of Chechnya, was brutally tortured after the prisoners' riot at the Angara colony; he was not provided with medical care, the "Civil Assistance" Committee has stated.

Khumaid Khaidaev's brother said that law enforcers have treated Khumaid and another inmate as organizers of the April 9 riot in the colony. However, Khaidaev, according to his brother, called him during the riot and said that he was trying to help a colony ward, who was beaten by prisoners, says the statement posted on the website of the "Civil Assistance" Committee on April 16.

Advocates managed to visit Khaidaev only on April 16 in the presence of the investigator. The whole Khumaid's body was covered with haematomas; his fingers and toes were broken, and his face was disfigured. Talking with difficulty, he told about torture. According to Khaidaev, on the first day he was handcuffed behind his back and chained to a heating battery in the cell. His face was covered with some sticky mask – it was removed four days later together with the skin. According to advocates, Khaidaev was rejected medical care, and his broken fingers and toes were not fixed.

The "Civil Assistance" Committee will file petitions and complaints about the actions of the FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service) employees, says the statement.
