Dagestani journalist Magomedov achieves review of his detention case by law enforcers at picket

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has declared illegal the court's ruling on the lawsuit lodged by Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" outlet, against the policemen who had detained him at his solo picket. The lawsuit has been sent for reconsideration.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this August, the Sovietsky District Court of Makhachkala denied Magomedov's lawsuit against the Makhachkala branch of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). The journalist asked that the actions of the policemen who detained him at his picket in January be declared illegal. The MIA spokeswoman explained Magomedov's detention as a concern for his safety due to possible unrests.

On January 16, 2023, law enforcers detained Magomed Magomedov and Idris Yusupov, who intended to hold solo pickets in defence of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, their colleague.

The police then claimed that the documents confirming the legality of their detention contain some state secrets, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project reported. The case has been transferred for consideration to the Dagestani SC, since only a regional court can review the documents restricted in access due to secrecy.

"Our main argument was that policemen had no right to interrupt our solo pickets or had to provide information confirming the non-safety thereof. We perceive this SC's decision as a victory," Magomed Magomedov has stated, adding that he disbelieve the argument about state secrets and treats it as a method of defence chosen by the MIA.
