Seven persons convicted in the case of prison jamaat in Kalmyk colony

A court in Rostov-on-Don has found seven residents of Southern Russia guilty of taking part in a terrorist cell in a Kalmyk colony and sentenced them to terms of freedom deprivation ranging from eight to eleven years.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the case on a terrorist cell in the Kalmyk colony, in which Kurban Medjidov, Magomedali Ramazanov, Dmitry Fedchenko, Gimbat Gimbatov, Ainutdin Aliboriev, Hasan Gasuev, Magomed Bagandov and Muslim Medjidov, was received by the Southern District Military Court in May 2021. On November 11, 2023, it became known that Ainutdin Aliboriev had committed suicide at the Rostov SIZO (pre-trial prison).

According to investigators, no later than 2013, a native of Dagestan, who was serving his sentence for illegal arms trafficking, created a terrorist organization in the colony; it consisted of more than 100 prisoners. Investigators named Shakhban Gasanov, who was killed in 2015 in Khasavyurt, as the organizer of the terrorist community. Pavel Bataev, the head of correctional colony No. 2, and Arthur Tsamaev, his ex-deputy, were detained on suspicion of patronizing the terrorist community for a reward.

According to the press service of the Southern District Military Court, during their participation in the jamaat, Medjidov, Ramazanov, Gimbatov, Fedchenko, Gasuev and Bagandov, conducted public religious classes, calling for terrorist activities and justifying terrorism.

According to the Russian National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), Gasanov was the leader of the Kizlyar militant grouping. In 2012, his relatives complained to human rights defenders about pressure from law enforcement bodies.

Earlier, the analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" doubted the scale of recruitment by the "Islamic State" (IS)* in the Kalmyk colony. In their opinion, information about a terrorist network in the colony looks like law enforcers' self-promotion.

*On December 29, 2014, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation recognized the organization "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL or IS) as a terrorist international organization and banned its activities in Russia.
