Rights defenders announce fundraising for Dagestani inmates at Kalmyk colony

Relatives of Daud Kuramagomedov and Magomed Atimagomedov, the victims of torture in Kalmyk Colony No. 2, have no money to pay for advocates, the human rights project "Gulagu.net" has informed, calling on natives of Dagestan to help their fellow countrymen. The inmates receive new torture threats, Snezhana Muntyan, an advocate, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that last September a criminal case was opened in Kalmykia against Magomed Atimagomedov and Daud Kuramagomedov, who were accused of attacking the colony staff and of inciting mass riots. According to advocates, their clients were severely beaten up in the colony.

Magomed Atimagomedov, who is accused of killing a colony warden, has stated that he had planned to run away, as he was threatened with charges under a terrorist article; however, he was not involved in the murder and signed his testimony under duress. Atimagomedov receives threats and fears for his life, Aza Alieva, an advocate, said in August 2022.

According to Snezhana Muntyan, without advocates' help, the inmates face further torture.

Human rights defenders possess information that "direct threats of repeating terrible tortures, in an even more sophisticated form" were voiced out against the suffered inmates; they "received threats of murder and subsequent concealment of the crime under the guise of an intra-cell conflict or under the guise of suicide."

Let us remind you that on August 8, 2022, the "Gulagu.net" project reported that more than a hundred inmates of the above colony were beaten up in connection with the murder of the colony warden. Magomed Atimagomedov was tortured, severely beaten up and poured with boiling water, forcing him to sign the necessary testimony, the human rights project has noted. Daud Kuramagomedov was also tortured.
