Supporters of oppositionist Ali Aliev go on hunger strike in Baku

Two deputy chairmen of the "Citizens and Development" Party (CDP) have gone on a hunger strike in solidarity with their leader, Ali Aliev, who is protesting against his groundless criminal prosecution.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 7, Ali Aliev, the convicted CDP leader, went on a hunger strike in protest against the charges put forward against him.

On June 8, the CDP issued a statement demanding an immediate release of its leader, Ali Aliev, and expressing fear for his health due to the hunger strike. The CDP has imposed responsibility for possible consequences for Aliev's health on the country's authorities.

"We are protesting against the unjustified and illegal criminal prosecution of Ali Aliev and will use all legal means to fight for his release. Now, Zeinal Abdullaev and myself are starting a hunger strike in the CDP office; and we expect new activists to join our protest action," Zaur Gasymov, a deputy chairman of the CDP, has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
