In Chechnya, doctors face ethical choice after surgeon Dagaev's death

When commenting on the information about the killing of surgeon Dagaev in Chechnya after his patient's death, health experts emphasized that a conclusion about a medical error could only be made based on the results of an expert study of the situation by a special commission. The incident with surgeon Salakh Dagaev has become an indicator of the atmosphere in the region, where it is now risky for doctors to perform complex surgeries, human rights defenders note.

Salakh Dagaev, a well-known surgeon in Chechnya, performed a surgery on September 22, which failed: his female patient died. The woman turned out to be a relative of an associate of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. According to the 1Adat Telegram Channel, after the surgery, the surgeon was kidnapped and beaten to death.

In Chechnya, those in power are so confident in their impunity that they overstep all the bounds of what is permissible, Ruslan Kutaev, the president of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations, notes.

According to doctors interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, most surgeons had failed surgeries in their practices, some of which ended in deaths of patients.

It is impossible for a practicing surgeon to have no lethal cases among patients, confirms Tamila Buashidze, who worked as an obstetrician-surgeon in Batumi.

The information about the brutal killing of the female patient's surgeon points to the feudal order and lawlessness in Chechnya, Internet users note.
