Some 200 people picket in Krasnodar against animal abuse

Krasnodar protesters have collected signatures to the appeal to Alexander Bastrykin, the Chairman of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), and President Vladimir Putin demanding to tighten punishments for cruelty to animals.

The sanctioned picket against abusing animals held within the nationwide campaign "Russia Without Cruelty" took place in Krasnodar on November 6 in the Park of Culture and Rest named after the 30th Anniversary of Victory. According to organizers, it was attended by about 200 people; many of them came with their pets.

The protest actions against cruelty to animals were preceded by a resonance incident in Khabarovsk – the so-called "case of Khabarovsk female-fleecers". According to investigators, two 17-year-old girls tortured and killed animals, taken by them from the shelter.

The basic demand of the picketers was to increase the maximum sanction under Article 245 of the Russian Criminal Code (application of cruelty to animals).

Also during the picket, they collected fodder and medicines for animals kept in shelters, and donations for medicines.

Many of the picketers were bystanders; they asked for posters and joined the action, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The picket was organized by local pet lovers and coordinated through social networks.
