Memorial events for Markelov and Baburova held in Russia and other countries
On the 16th anniversary of the murder of advocate Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova, a journalist of the “Novaya Gazeta” newspaper, memorial events were held in various cities in Russia, as well as France, Germany, Thailand, and other countries.
On January 19, a memorial event to pay tribute to the memory of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova was held in Moscow. Activists laid flowers at the site where the advocate and the journalist were killed. People also organized a kind of a memorial by bringing photographs of several activists killed by neo-Nazis. The police checked an ID of one of the activists who were laying flowers at the site, the “RusNews” Telegram channel reported.
One of the participants in the memorial event was detained: six law enforcers knocked him down and then took him to a paddy wagon. Later, it became known that the detainee was a nationalist. One of the activists tried to film the moment of his detention, but the law enforcers made him to delete the video, the “OVD-Info”* human rights project reported.
A memorial event also took place in Volgograd, where activists left photographs and flowers at the monument to victims of political repression. In Saint Petersburg, participants in the memorial event held on Marsovo Pole paid tribute to the memory of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova by laying flowers, the “SOTA” Telegram channel reported.
Memorial events also took place in Berlin, where a march of solidarity with anti-fascists took place. A thematic film was shown in Warsaw. In Thailand, a memorial event took place in Queen Sirikit Park, which has become a symbol of cultural and religious diversity in the country.
Let us remind you that on January 19, 2009, Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were shot dead in Moscow after a press conference dedicated to the release from prison of former Colonel Yuri Budanov, who served his sentence on the charge of murdering Chechen girl Elza Kungaeva. Stanislav Markelov was representing the interests of the injured party in the case against former Colonel Yuri Budanov.
