Fifteen years pass since murder of advocate Markelov and journalist Baburova

On the 15th anniversary of the murder of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova, Moscow activists called for laying flowers at the place of their deaths and announced the screening of a film about the murdered journalist.

On January 19, 2009, Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova, a journalist of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, were shot dead in Moscow after a press conference dedicated to the release from prison of former Colonel Yuri Budanov, who served the sentence on the charge of murdering Chechen native Elza Kungaeva. Stanislav Markelov represented the interests of the injured party in the Yuri Budanov’s case.

“On the 15th anniversary of their death, we call to pay tribute to their memory and the memory of others killed by neo-Nazis,” the “January 19 Committee” wrote in its Telegram channel.

Let us remind you that Nikita Tikhonov and Yevgenia Khasis were found guilty of the murder of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova. The court sentenced Nikita Tikhonov to life imprisonment, and Yevgenia Khasis to 18 years of imprisonment.

Stanislav Markelov was one of the few advocates who managed to secure the conviction of military personnel for their crimes in Chechnya. The advocate will forever remain known for his role in the cases against Yuri Budanov and Sergey Lapin, also known as “Cadet,” states human rights defender Alexander Cherkasov.
