Ombudsperson treats information about Dagestanis' rights violation at Smolensk colony as unreliable

The conducted check failed to reveal any violations of the rights of natives of Dagestan kept in the Smolensk Penal Colony No. 2, Zapir Alkhasov, the Degastani Ombudsperson has informed. There is only one prisoner from Dagestan kept there; and the colony has no dungeons (punishment cells). This was claimed by the branch of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN).

The rights of Dagestan prisoners are violated in a colony located in the Smolensk Region; some of them are kept in dungeons; others have cut their veins in protest, a source has informed.

On August 20-22, "one convict, a native of Dagestan, was held in the punishment cell of the above correctional institution. There were no protests on his part," the Dagestan Ombudsperson, Zapir Alkhasov, has reported in his Telegram channel, adding that the Prosecutor's Office was checking how justified it was to place this inmate into the SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that relatives of inmates from Dagestan, who are serving their terms in other Russian regions, had repeatedly complained about violations of their rights. In particular, on August 5, relatives said that after the hostage taking at the Rostov-on-Don SIZO, they lost contact with the natives of Dagestan, Bashir Dibirasulaev and Kurban-Ismail Mutairov, accused in the "prison jamaat" case. Law enforcers had transferred Dibirasulaev and Mutairov to the Taganrog SIZO and refuse to let their advocates to meet them, their relatives have complained.
