Ombudsperson reacts to harassment of Dagestani natives in penal colony

The rights of inmates from Dagestan are violated in the penal colony located in the Smolensk Region; some of them are kept in the dungeon (punishment cell), while others have cut their veins in protest, a source has reported. Zapir Alkhasov, the Ombudsperson of Dagestan, has reported that he had taken the incident under his control.

According to the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, more than 60 prisoners are kept in the dungeon, some have cut their veins due to unbearable custody conditions, the Ombudsperson has stated.

Zapir Alkhasov has reported that he had sent an appeal to his colleague of the Smolensk Region with a request to conduct a check.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that relatives of the Dagestani prisoners serving their terms in other regions had repeatedly complained about the violation of their rights. In particular, on August 5, relatives said that after the hostage-taking in the Rostov-on-Don SIZO (pre-trial prison), they lost contact with the natives of Dagestan, Bashir Dibirasulaev and Kurban-Ismail Mutairov, accused within the "prison jamaat" case. Law enforcers took Dibirasulaev and Mutairov to the Taganrog SIZO and are refusing to let them meet with their advocates, their relatives have complained.
