Court commutes sentence of law enforcers for beating Derbent resident Temirkhan Amakhanov

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has commuted the sentence of former policemen Gasan Adalov and Magomed Yunusov in the case on beating Derbent resident Temirkhan Amakhanov. The punishment has been reduced from four to three years of imprisonment in a penal colony.

The Supreme Court has also excluded “intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm” from the charge, the “Traumpunkt” human rights project reports in its Telegram channel.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that during several years, Temirkhan Amakhanov tried to achieve the institution of criminal proceedings against the law enforcers who beat him. A criminal case was instituted in 2019 after repeated complaints about the investigator’s inaction. In June 2023, the Derbent City Court found Gasan Adalov and Magomed Yunusov, employees of the Ministry Internal Affairs, guilty of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and sentenced them to four years of imprisonment in a penal colony.

In April 2016, two policemen burst into Temirkhan Amakhanov’s house. According to the man’s version, the law enforcers attacked him, and when he began to defend himself, one of the law enforcers opened fire from a pistol. Temirkhan Amakhanov related the attack on him to the fact that he and some of his neighbours actively opposed the construction of a high-rise apartment building. A year later, law enforcers took Temirkhan Amakhanov to a police department, where they beat him so severe that he had to have his spleen removed.

Let us remind you that Temirkhan Amakhanov requested the court to oblige the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to pay 5 million roubles as compensation for moral and material damage, but the Derbent City Court ordered compensation of 400,000 roubles. Temirkhan Amakhanov noted that the above amount would not even cover the cost of medical treatment. In May, the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan increased the amount of compensation to 800,000 roubles.
