Defendants in case on riots at Makhachkala airport plead not guilty

Shamil Khadulaev, the chair of the Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) of Dagestan, reports that 134 people remain under arrest in connection with the riots at an airport in Makhachkala and two others still stay under house arrest, although the accused claim that they were at the airport, but did not participate in the riots. It is necessary to publicly punish those whose guilt in attacking police inspectors and damaging airport property has been proven, but staying at the airport does not imply any criminal liability, lawyer Arsen Magomedov emphasizes.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Anvarbek Ataev, a resident of the Makhachkala village of Tarki, Islam Ibragimov and Magomed Omaraskhabov, residents of Makhachkala, Rabadan Radjabov, a resident of Kaspiysk, and Salik Ramazanov from the village of Fiy in the Akhtynsky District of Dagestan are accused of participating in mass riots. Rabadan Radjabov is also charged with using violence against a public officer.

By December 13, 2023, about 150 people had been arrested in the criminal case on the riots at the Makhachkala airport, including one of them also accused of attacking a law enforcer. The number of those arrested also included those who were simply observing what was happening at the airport, a member of the PMC of Dagestan reported.

Magomed Omaraskhabov, accused of participating in the riots at the Makhachkala airport, completely denies his guilt, his advocate Laila Ubaidulaeva reports to the “Caucasian Knot”.

Shamil Khadulaev, the chair of the Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) of Dagestan, visited many of those arrested in connection with the riots at the Makhachkala airport, but none of them admitted their guilt. “One person told me that he was not at the airport at all, but he was forced to sign a confession under threats,” Shamil Khadulaev said.

Lawyer Arsen Magomedov, a former member of the Public Chamber of Dagestan, has also called for punishing those who are really guilty and setting free those who just stayed at the airport in Makhachkala being not involved in the riots.
