In Nalchik, Circassian activists recall consequence of Caucasian War

At a rally held in Nalchik on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War, participants of the rally noted that Adygs were brought to the brink of destruction as a result of the Caucasian War. The activists have emphasized that it is important, while preserving the memory of ancestors, to learn lessons from the history and think about future generations.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 20, residents of Kabardino-Balkaria paid tribute to the memory of the victims of the Caucasian War on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of its end. The people say that they try to come every year to pay tribute to the memory of those who perished for the independence of the Circassian people. Solemn events are taking place in Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, and the Krasnodar Territory.

Khauti Sokhrokov, President of the International Circassian Association, notes that May 21 is a day of mourning. As a result of the Caucasian War, 90% of the Adyg people lost, if not their lives, then their homeland, and there were similar tragic pages in the history of other peoples. It is important to learn lessons from the history in order to avoid similar tragedies in the future, Khauti Sokhrokov has emphasized.

Circassian activist Idar Tsipinov explains that he perceives the day of May 21 as a kind of tribute to his ancestors, who valiantly defended their way of life and traditions.

A young man who introduced himself as Kantemir says that May 21 is the most important day for the Circassians.

“Our people are scattered. Our compatriots live in 50 countries of the world. It is important that the Circassians, wherever they live, remember their traditions and their history,” Kantemir emphasized.
