Defender: Dagestani natives Atimagomedov and Kuramagomedov get excessively harsh sentence in case on murder in penal colony

The sentence for natives of Dagestan Magomed Atimagomedov and Daud Kuramagomedov in a case on murder in a Kalmyk penal colony became excessively harsh due to the fact that the defendants refused advocates by agreement, notes a former advocate of Magomed Atimagomedov.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Magomed Atimagomedov was sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment, while Daud Kuramagomedov was sentenced to life imprisonment. The defendants were found guilty of attempting to escape, murder, attempted murder, and disrupting the operation of the penal colony.

According to the court’s version, on August 5, 2022, two convicts attacked penal colony employees, and one of the victims died. According to advocates’ version, their clients were severely beaten in the penal colony. Magomed Atimagomedov stated that he was planning to escape, because officers of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) threatened to charge him under an article on terrorism, but he was not involved in the murder and signed the testimony under pressure.

Advocate Aza Alieva reports that she does not have sufficiently reliable information about what prompted Magomed Atimagomedov to abandon his defence. “Perhaps he thought it was all useless. Or he was subjected to pressure,” the advocate said.

Advocate Aza Alieva notes that if the case against the penal colony employees is brought to a verdict and their guilt in torture is recognized, that may become the basis for revising the sentence for the natives of Dagestan.
