Natives of Dagestan convicted for murder in Kalmyk colony

The Supreme Court (SC) of Kalmykia has found natives of Dagestan, Magomed Atimagomedov and Daud Kuramagomedov, guilty of attempting to escape, murder and attempted murder, and disrupting the colony's work. Atimagomedov has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, and Kuramagomedov – to life-long imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September 2022, investigators in Kalmykia opened a criminal case against Atimagomedov and Kuramagomedov, accusing them of attacking colony staff and calls for mass riots. According to the advocates, their clients were severely beaten up in their penal colony. Magomed Atimagomedov, accused of murdering a colony warden, claimed that he had planned to escape because employees of the FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service) threatened to charge him with terrorism, but he was not involved in the murder, and signed the testimony under pressure. Atimagomedov is being threatened and fears for his life, his advocate, Aza Alieva, reported in August 2022.

According to the court, on August 5, 2022, two convicts deliberately "attacked colony staff, causing their injuries." As a result, one of them died. At the same moment, one of the defendants attempted to murder one of the convicts; and later that day the defendants entered the dormitory area, where they attacked six FSIN employees, who were injured.

Aza Alieva, an advocate, has reported that earlier her client and Kuramagomedov refused from advocates' services. In her opinion, this was a wrong decision and a shorter sentence could have been achieved, but Atimagomedov was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

According to the "Chernovik" outlet, Alieva has added that four colony employees are kept at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) within a torture case; another one is under house arrest.
