80 years since Vainakhs' deportation

February 23 marked the 80th anniversary of the deportation of Chechens and Ingushes to Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The head of Chechnya and republic's state-owned media have passed over this date in silence.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2022, no commemorative events were held in Chechnya; officials dedicated only posts in social networks dedicated to this date.

Let us note that on February 23, in the village of Chechen-Aul "the gates will be open in all yards for the whole day" as a sign of memory and grief for deportation victims. The tradition of opening gates has become a way for residents of Chechnya to commemorate deportation victims.

On the occasion of the 80th deportation anniversary, the public organization "Aukh" announced Muslim mourning rites to be held in the Novolaksky District of Dagestan. The local prosecutor's office has warned organizers against unsanctioned rallies and pickets.

The eviction of people was accompanied by executions of civilians, including elderly women and cripples, but no one was ever punished; and 714 deportation performers were awarded military orders.

Earlier, Chechen authorities called on residents of the republic to abandon the term "deportation", replacing it with the words "eviction" or "repressions". However, analysts then noted that Chechen authorities wouldn't be able to erase the deportation starting date from people's memory.
