ECtHR recognizes violations of rights of Derbent residents Barzukaev and Kurbanov

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) obliged the Russian authorities to pay 26,000 euros to each of Derbent residents Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov in compensation, recognizing that law enforcers forced them to confess to crimes under torture.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 30, 2022, it became known that the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan dismissed a complaint filed by a law enforcer who demanded to punish a mother of Derbent resident Islam Barzukaev, accused of terrorism, for accusing law enforcers of torturing her son.

Let us remind you that, according to the investigation’s version, Islam Barzukaev, Gasan Kurbanov, and Mirzaali Mirzaliev, another resident of Derbent, organized an armed grouping to “attack law enforcers and render armed resistance.” Relatives stated that before their detention, all three men were kidnapped and forced to confess to crimes under torture.

In January 2021, a criminal case was also instituted against Islam Barzukaev, Gasan Kurbanov, and Mirzaali Mirzaliev under the article on creating a terrorist grouping.

Relatives of Islam Barzukaev, Gasan Kurbanov, and Mirzaali Mirzaliev regularly held pickets in Makhachkala in support of them. A mother of Mirzaali Mirzaliev claimed that law enforcers were forcing him to slander Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov. Investigators ten times refused relatives to institute a case on torture against law enforcers.
