Journalist Milashina reports details of attack on her in Chechnya

On the way from an airport to Grozny, a driver of a taxi, in which journalist Elena Milashina and advocate Alexander Nemov were traveling, was forced to stop by unidentified persons. Then the strangers tied Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov up, beat them, and put guns to their heads, Elena Milashina reported.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on the way from the airport to Grozny, Elena Milashina, a journalist of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, and Alexander Nemov, an advocate of Zarema Musaeva, were attacked. They were beaten by armed men in masks.

Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov arrived in Grozny to attend the pronouncement of the verdict in a case against Zarema Musaeva. The court sentenced her to five years and six months of imprisonment.

According to Elena Milashina, the strangers in a car interfered with the motion of the taxi car, in which she was traveling together with Alexander Nemov, and then they pushed the taxi car to the side of the road and forced the driver to stop, the “Ostorozhno Novosti” (Caution News) Telegram channel reports.

Elena Milashina repeatedly criticized the authorities of Chechnya in her articles. On March 17, 2021, participants of a rally in Grozny cursed Elena Milashina for her article about extrajudicial executions. On March 15, 2021, the day of the other publication of the journalistic investigation, the building where the editorial office of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” was located was subjected to a chemical attack.

Elena Milashina had also been attacked in Chechnya earlier. So, on February 6, 2020, unidentified persons beat her and advocate Marina Dubrovina in a hotel in Grozny.

Marina Dubrovina and Elena Milashina repeatedly received threats while working in Chechnya. Their friends and colleagues suggested that the attack on them in Grozny was organized with the knowledge of the local authorities.

Elena Milashina believes that she and Marina Dubrovina were beaten in 2020 in connection with attending the trial in the case against Islam Nukhanov, who recorded a video about the luxurious life of Chechen officials. Islam Nukhanov, a 27-year-old man, was tortured and then accused of storing ammunition.

In October 2019, Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, also spoke about Elena Milashina. Ramzan Kadyrov suggested that Elena Milashina was criticizing the Chechen authorities in her articles because of her resentment against Chechen men and voiced the idea of interfering in the personal life of the journalist.
