In Makhachkala, administration of specialized art school explains scandalous fashion show

A theatrical costume in the graduation work of a design student, which outraged users of the social media, has nothing to do with religious symbols, announces the administration of a specialized art school in Makhachkala. The Dagestani Ministry of Culture reported about the official investigation into the incident.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on June 25, a video was posted on the Internet in which students in Makhachkala presented a fashion show. Some models were in images resembling the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In their comments on the social media, some users demanded to dismiss the administration of the educational institution for insulting the feelings of believers.

The art school administration explained that the fashion collection presented in the video is dedicated to British fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen, who committed suicide in 2010 because of the depression after the death of his mother.

“The graduation work is a discussion about an extraordinary person … An additional source of inspiration was Federico Fellini’s film ‘Juliet of the Spirits’,” the RIA “Novosti” quotes the administration of the art school as stating.

The administration of the art school has emphasized that “no provocative or propagandistic tasks were set during the implementation of the graduation project.”

Let us remind you that that earlier, residents of Dagestan had already criticized participants of fashion shows. So, in May 2021, a demonstration of a translucent dress at the wedding fashion show of the “Discourse” contemporary art club in Makhachkala outraged social media users. They stated that showing models of revealing dresses in Dagestan was unacceptable. Later, in their video message, organizers called the incident “an unfortunate mistake.”

In May 2021, analysts pointed out that scandals around fashion shows allow “fighters for morality” to declare themselves, but such situations arise from the paucity of cultural life in the republic.
