Court rules on liquidation of MHG

In Moscow, a court granted a claim filed by the Russian Ministry of Justice for the liquidation of the Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG).

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on December 20, 2022, it became known that the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) filed a lawsuit to the Moscow City Court to liquidate the MHG. The reason was the participation of the regional organization in events in other regions. The MoJ decided to liquidate the organization and ban its activities due to monitoring of trials and appeals to authorities outside the Moscow Region, the MHG reported. At the today’s hearing, the court refused to let journalists into the courtroom.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 9, 2022, the Court of Cassation in Moscow upheld the decision to liquidate the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”*, pronounced on December 29, 2021 at the lawsuit filed by the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office. The HRC “Memorial”* was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The decision of the Nobel Committee was made taking into account the long-term activities of the “International Memorial”* (International Historical Educational Charitable and Human Rights Society “Memorial”) and the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* for the benefit of peace and respect for human rights, and the award gives a chance for the continuation of the human rights and historical activities of the “Memorials”*, human rights defenders emphasize.

*The organization was included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the register of NCOs, performing the functions of a foreign agent, and was liquidated by a court’s decision.
