ECtHR awards compensations to four convicts from Rostov Region

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has taken the side of four residents of Taganrog and awarded them compensations from 2100 to 9750 euros, after finding the period of their pre-trial detention as unreasonably long.

The four men were convicted of stealing reinforcement bars from the Taganrog Commercial Seaport where they worked. Each of them was sentenced to two years in prison. They were in pre-trial custody from February 2014 to February 2016. The ECtHR found this term excessive and pointed to "the use of assumptions, in the absence of any evidentiary basis, about the risks of their absconding or obstruction of justice".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2022, the ECtHR obliged Russian authorities to pay 45,000 euros to Georgy Sveshnikov, a resident of Sochi, as compensation in the case of his torture by law enforcers.
