Rumanian authorities refuse to release Gerikhanova, native of Chechnya

Rumanian authorities have decided to send Amina Gerikhanova, a native of Chechnya, who faces extradition to Russia, to a migration prison after her release from custody, the "Vayfond" Chechen human rights association has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 16, the Sweden-based "Vayfond" called on volunteers to help find housing for Amina Gerikhanova in Rumania. After her release from custody, which is expected on September 7 or 8, Gerikhanova will not be able to leave Rumania, since her extradition to Russia has not been decided yet, human rights defenders explained. On August 18, the "Vayfond" reported that with volunteers' help, housing was found for Gerikhanova.

The Rumanian police refused to leave Amina Gerikhanova at large after release, the "Vayfond" has reported. "She'll be transferred to a migration prison for 30 days," the association informed on its Telegram channel.

Let us remind you that Amina Gerikhanova, 36, was detained with her child on March 13 at the Rumanian border while trying to leave Ukraine. The Interpol is looking for her at the request of Russia, where she was accused of participating in hostilities in Syria.

On August 6, members of the Chechen Diaspora held a protest rally at the Rumanian consulate in Edinburgh, urging the European Union not to extradite Amina Gerikhanova to Russia.
