Zarema Musaeva's arrest extended
A court in Grozny has extended Zarema Musaeva's arrest until March 26 under a criminal case on disrupting the work of a penal colony. Meanwhile, her sentence under the first criminal case was due to terminate on March 23, the "Team against Torture" (TaT)* has informed.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 29, a court in Grozny extended Musaeva's arrest until February 24 under the case of disrupting the colony work. On February 10, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya dismissed the defence's appeal and left the woman in custody.
According to investigators, Musaeva had attacked the colony warden who accompanied her to the hospital for medical treatment.
According to Alexander Savin, one of Zarema’s advocates, she continues having health problems due to diabetes. She was recently prescribed new treatment for her leg, since she can only move around on crutches for a long time due to periodic complications.
Mariana Katsarova, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation with human rights in the Russian Federation, has included Musaeva in the list of the Russian political prisoners, who need urgent release due to their health condition. Musaeva's deteriorating health is "a grim reminder of how Chechen authorities use family persecution as a repression tool," the UN website has stated.
Let us remind you that Musaeva faces up to five years in jail.
*The "Team against Torture" (TaT, formerly the "Committee against Torture" – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
