Inmate of Volgograd SIZO self-mutilates

A man who is kept under arrest at SIZO-4 (pre-trial prison) in Volgograd has cut his forearm. He is registered as a person prone to suicide and self-mutilation, the press service of the local branch of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) has informed today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night on November 25, seven inmates of Volgograd SIZO-4 inflicted traumas on themselves; one of them was hospitalized. The FSIN explained their protest by disagreement with the requirements of the custody regime. The inmates' mothers have suggested that their sons who had attempted suicide at the Volgograd SIZO had not complained about their custody conditions out of fear.

Last weekend, the 30-year-old inmate suspected of committing a robbery, cut his left forearm, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the press service of the Volgograd Regional Branch of the FSIN.

"He is registered as a person prone to suicide and self-mutilation. Checks are conducted of all such incidents. He gives no explanations of his actions," the press service source said.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on November 30, the body of a 61-year-old inmate was found in SIZO-4 in Volgograd. The man, who had been accused of committing a murder, was found hanged; no signs of violent death were found on his body, the Volgograd Regional Branch of the FSIN has reported.
