Azerbaijani oppositionist Yagublu intends to go abroad through the court

Tofig Yagublu, an oppositional politician, sentenced to conditional imprisonment, has asked the court to allow him to travel to Georgia to attend his mother's funeral. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice (MoJ) opposed such a permit.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September 2020, Yagublu was sentenced to four years and three months in prison within the case of a road accident and an attack on a married couple. On July 12, Yagublu was forbidden to fly from Azerbaijan to Georgia to his mother's funeral. On July 15, the Court of Appeal sentenced him to a 2.5-year of conditional imprisonment.

Tofig Yagublu is a former deputy chairman of the "Musavat" Party and a member of the coordination centre of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF). He was repeatedly detained and imprisoned; and the Amnesty International recognized him to be a prisoner of conscience.

Nigyar Khazi, an activist and a Yagublu's daughter, said she was outraged by the authorities' actions that prohibited her father from visiting his mother's funeral. "It's impossible to understand why they are so vindictive. Why not to let him to come to the commemoration and to mourn with the family," she has stressed.
