Law enforcers take Gadaev out of Novy Urengoy to Chechnya

After deportation from France, Magomed Gadaev was handed over to Chechen law enforcers, who took him to Chechnya in connection with a criminal case on storing weapons, Oleg Orlov, a human rights defender, has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 9, Magomed Gadaev was deported from France to Russia despite his protest. Once at the police of the city of Novy Urengoy, he stated that he needed state protection, as his life was in danger.

Magomed Gadaev, 37, who left Russia in 2010, is a witness in a criminal case brought against Chechen law enforcers under the articles "Kidnapping" and "Exceeding Official Powers", which is still being investigated, the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper reported earlier. In Chechnya, Gadaev had been kidnapped, kept at some Chechen power body, from where he managed to get out and go abroad.

Magomed Gadaev was handed over to Chechen law enforcers and then taken to Chechnya, Oleg Orlov, a board member of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial"*, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. According to Mr Orlov, Gadaev was taken in connection with a criminal case initiated under Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – on the discovery of a hideout with weapons. "We don't know in what capacity he figures in this case – as a witness or as a defendant; they'll explain it to him already in Chechnya. It is obvious that the case is fabricated from start to end," Oleg Orlov has stated.

* the HRC "Memorial" is recognized in the Russian Federation as a foreign agent
