Sister and daughter of murdered prosecutor Cheldiev's wife recognized as victims

The murdered wife of a former prosecutor from North Ossetia, Igor Cheldiev, had complained of domestic violence to her friends and relatives, her sister, Kristina Anokhina, has stated. The problem of domestic violence is exacerbated in law enforcers' families, since the latter feel their impunity, said Agunda Bekoeva, a co-founder of the "Khotae" movement.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Cheldiev was detained in February 2020.

Cheldiev has stated that his wife fell unsuccessfully and hit her head, but experts established that her death was a result of a blow with a fireplace poker.

A sister and a daughter of the assassinated woman have been recognized to be the suffered party. This status gives them the right to express their opinions on the criminal's punishment and file claims of material nature against the defendant if the court finds him guilty, Batraz Kulchiev, an advocate, has noted.

The cases of domestic violence, where a law enforcer is a defendant, should be categorized separately, said Agunda Bekoeva, co-founder of the "Khotae" movement.

There are very few examples of adequate law enforcers' response to domestic violence, among other things because the majority of victims fear to turn to the police. However, according to Ms Bekoeva, amid the resonant case of the murder of Regina Gagieva, the attitude towards the problem of domestic violence has begun to change.
