Advocate treats transfer of Mekhti Ibragimov to quarantine zone as illegal

Mekhti Ibragimov, a son of a Mamed Ibragim, a member of the Presidium of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was sent to a quarantine centre, despite the court's decision to place him under house arrest. Advocate Agil Laidjev treats such a transfer of his client as a violation of the law.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 22, Mekhti Ibragimov was arrested for three months on the charge of spreading the coronavirus infection after a protest action in Baku. On August 10, Mekhti Ibragimov went on a hunger strike with the demand to release him. On August 19, the court granted the advocate's motion to transfer Mekhti Ibragimov to house arrest.

At night on July 15, a non-sanctioned march took place in Baku in support of the Azerbaijani Army, which ended in activists' clashes with the police. The PFPA reported that dozens of activists were detained after the action.

After the court hearing, Mekhti Ibragimov was taken to the quarantine centre in the Athletes Village in Baku. Advocate Agil Laidjev called the placement of Mekhti Ibragimov under quarantine illegal.

"The court's decision clearly and unequivocally states that Mekhti Ibragimov should be released from custody and placed under house arrest. For medical reasons, there was also no need to place Mekhti Ibragimov under quarantine. Even if we assume that he suffered from COVID-19, all quarantine terms have already expired," the advocate told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
