Frenchmen doubt expediency of detaining Chechens in Strasbourg

The news about the detention in Strasbourg of migrants from Chechnya, who made selfies at the cathedral, has triggered controversy among French Internet users.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 27, policemen detained two natives of Chechnya, treating their gestures, when they made selfies, as justification of terrorism.

Some French Internet users have approved policemen's actions, stating a possible threat posed by the Chechens. Others were surprised at the policemen's reaction, treating the gesture with a raised index finger as traditional for Muslims.

Thus, by 10:20 p.m. Moscow time, the today's article about the detention of Chechens in Strasbourg, posted on the website of the French newspaper "20 Minutes", gathered 30 comments with opposite viewpoints.

The detention of the Chechens has triggered a dispute in the "DNA Strasbourg" group on the Facebook.

"France will give him citizenship; and our justice will gently ask him to comply with the law; but in a few years we'll be surprised when he commits a terror act," David Boscorelli wrote.

In the "Pokaa" group, one of the debaters has recalled that the Dagestani fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov often makes the same gesture, for which the natives of Chechnya were detained, during his fights.

  • Lawyers comment on scandal with equipment sale on behalf of "Akhmat" special unit

Lawyers have noted that it is practically impossible to hold the scammers accountable for the fact that they had sold stolen property, posing themselves as fighters of the "Akhmat" Chechen special unit. But these actions have seriously discredited the "Akhmat"; and it's possible that Chechnya's enemies are behind this, a political analyst has suggested.
