Derbent women-hunger-strikers achieve meeting with their sons

On the third day of their hunger strike, two female residents of Derbent received a permit to meet their detained sons, and stopped their protest.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 15, relatives of three residents of Derbent appealed to the police with statements about their kidnapping. Later, it turned out that all three were detained within the case of illegal dealing with explosives, weapons and ammunition. Their relatives believe that the case was fabricated; on June 20, they held solo pickets in Derbent demanding the release the detainees.

On June 24, the mothers of the detained Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov declared a hunger strike near the police building in Derbent demanding the release of their sons.

According to the women, today, policemen have persuaded them to stop the hunger strike, promising to arrange their meeting with the sons.

Then, the women received the documents necessary to enter the SIZO (pre-trial prison) and see the detainees; they stopped their hunger strike. "We'll see how they feel and find out why they took responsibility for weapons. And then, we'll consult lawyers – they should already be in Derbent by the evening – and decide what to do next, and whether we should turn to the Dagestani Ombudsperson. The most important thing now is to find out everything that happened directly from my son," Ms Barzukaeva has explained.
