Azerbaijani oppositionist Ilgar Mamedov demands to punish judges

Ilgar Mamedov, the Chairman of the Republican Alternative (ReAl) Party has appealed to the Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office demanding to punish the judges involved in his arrest and imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 13, the appellate instance replaced Ilgar Mamedov's remaining prison term for conditional punishment; and in the evening of the same day the oppositionist returned home. The court did not acquit Mamedov; and his defence intends to file a cassation appeal to the country's Supreme Court. Mamedov spent five and a half years in prison.

Ilgar Mamedov was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of organizing protests among residents of the city of Ismayilli. On November 16, 2017, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found violation of Mamedov's right to a fair trial and decided that he should receive compensation in the amount of 10,000 euros.

Ilgar Mamedov has appealed to Zakir Garalov, the General Public Prosecutor of Azerbaijan, with a demand to initiate criminal cases against judges who, in his opinion, executed the "order" against him, says the press release of the ReAl Party, received on September 10 by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"The decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on my first complaint, which came into force on October 13, 2014, states that the main aim of decisions adopted on February 4, 2013, and later was 'to punish or silence me down'. The ECtHR found that my freedom was limited not because there were substantial suspicions of my commission of a crime, but for other purposes," Mr Mamedov wrote in his complaint to the General Public Prosecutor.

Ilgar Mamedov believes that judges had "deliberately" restricted his freedom.
