Authorities ignore republics' resolution on native languages

The authorities have revealed no interested in the resolution adopted by representatives of 12 national republics of Russia, which treated the law on voluntary study of native languages as unconstitutional. The conference delegates received a response only from Dzambolat Tedeev, an MP from North Ossetia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that representatives of 12 Russian republics, including Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Adygea and North Ossetia, demanded removing the draft law on provisional study of native languages from the agenda.

Zaurbi Chundyshko, the head of the public organization "Adyge Khase" of the Republic of Adygea, has noted that if the study of native national languages (mother tongues) becomes voluntary, this would lead to a very rapid disappearance of them from the educational system.

The abolition of the compulsory study of native languages at schools will kill the languages of minor nations and result in the death of Circassian (Adyg) culture, the International Circassian Association has stated.

Alikhan Khoranov, a representative of North Ossetia, has emphasized that the mandatory study of native languages is the only guarantee that the national languages and the culture of minor nations is not lost.
