IPI resents journalist's killing

The International Press Institute that monitors the situation with press freedom in various countries expressed its indignation at the killing of journalist Magomed-Zagid Varisov in Dagestan. The Vienna, Austria, based Institute in its release also expresses concerns about the present situation in Dagestan. The organisation called on the Russian government to stop persecution of journalists in the republic, Radio Liberty says.

Magomed Varisov, an observer with Novoe Delo weekly, was killed in the capital of Dagestan, Makhachkala, on 28 June. Unknown attackers fired at the car in which the journalist was going home.
