Activist Giorgi Kvanchiani beaten in Georgia

The incident occurred late in the evening on December 3. After being beaten, Giorgi Kvanchiani, an activist of the "Free Zone" NGO, was taken to a hospital by an ambulance.

Before that, the activist submitted to the editors' office of the newspaper "Chronicle+" an article about former policemen who moved to the United States, the "Rustavi 2" TV Channel reports today.

According to Eliso Kiladze, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Chronicle+", Giorgi Kvanchiani submitted to the newspaper an interview, obtained via Skype from a relative, a former policeman living in the US. The material was scheduled to be published on December 5. About 40 minutes after Giorgi Kvanchiani left the newspaper's office, he informed the reporters via Facebook that he had been beaten.

"After Giorgi Kvanchiani left the office of the 'Chronicle+', two unidentified people followed him. Those people dressed in civilian clothes beat Giorgi Kvanchiani," Eliso Kiladze said on the air of the "Rustavi 2" TV Channel.

The editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Chronicle+" has clarified that the former policeman gave Giorgi Kvanchiani "a very scandalous interview about the events taking place in the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA)," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports today.

According to medical officers, the activist has been diagnosed with brain concussion and presumably a trauma to his skull.

Full text of the article is available on the Russian page of 24/7 Internet agency ‘Caucasian Knot’.
