Afghan Mukhtarly's wife leaves Georgia
The reasons for departure from Georgia of Leyla Mustafaeva, the wife of Afghan Mukhtarly, a journalist arrested in Azerbaijan, will be announced later, her advocate Archil Chopikashvili has stated.
Afghan Mukhtarly, who left for Georgia in 2014, disappeared in Tbilisi on May 29. On May 30, he phoned his advocate and reported that he had been forcibly brought to Baku. On May 31, in Baku, the court arrested Afghan Mukhtarly for three months. The journalist was charged with violating the state border, smuggling and resisting a border guard. Afghan Mukhtarly denies the charges filed against him.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 10, Leyla Mustafaeva complained about the lack of results of the inquiry into her husband’s kidnapping in Georgia, and asked the Georgian parliament to set up a special commission to assess the actions of the officials involved in her husband’s disappearance from Georgia.
Leyla Mustafaeva left Georgia on October 11, lawyers from the NGO “Young Advocates” told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. Mustafaeva herself confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, who managed to reach her by phone, that she had left Georgia, but did not specify her current whereabouts.
The above Archil Chopikashvili, who defends Leyla Mustafaeva’s family interests, will announce later the reasons for her departure left Georgia and whether she intends to return, the "Georgia Online" reports.
Earlier, in 2016, the Azerbaijani journalist Leyla Mustafaeva was denied residence permit in Georgia. "I was told that I am engaged in a ‘dangerous business’, and my activities are contrary to Georgia’s interests," the Radio Free Europe quotes Leyla Mustafaeva as saying.
