Major attack in Dagestan

A bus with police officers was blown up at the intersection of two central streets, Dadakhayev St and Bogatyriov St, in Makhachkala yesterday. Nine people suffered because of the explosion, a source with Dagestan's Internal Affairs Ministry said. "Seven police officers and two passers-by, local residents, were wounded or contused," the source told RIA Novosti. Those wounded were delivered to the Central Republican Clinical Hospital (CRCH), according to the Dagestani Disaster Medicine Centre. However, the doctor on duty at the CRCH hospital ward said six wounded policemen had been admitted to the hospital as of 12.10 am on 1 June 2005.

Criminals had planted a radio controlled explosive device stuffed with destructive elements on the roadside, according to preliminary information.

Experts say this explosion resembles all previous blasts aimed against law enforcement agents in Makhachkala.
