Tenants of Sochi apartment block ask to protect them from landslide

At night on July 15, a heavy rain hit the "Makarenko" garden association and caused an active soil shift toward a residential 8-storey house.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in December 2016, house tenants held a rally and demanded from the Mayoralty to enforce the court judgement and eliminate the unauthorized dump of soil and construction debris, which caused a landslide descend onto their house. A Mayoralty official then stated that they would appeal against the judgement.

Within the past six months, the situation has changed for the worse. The landslide continues destroying the house, the author of a message received by the SMS-service of the "Caucasian Knot" wrote on July 13.

Irina Varlamova, a tenant of the house in question, said that tenants are in despair, "Old people, children and invalids live in our house; this is the only housing we have."

The judicial legalization of illegally erected multi-storey houses and transfer thereof to developers violates the rights of people to a safe living environment and leads to disasters, said Olga Kozinskaya, the leader of the public urban planning council.
