Half of "Kinotavr" programme are debuts

Today, Sochi opens its 28th "Kinotavr" Russian Film Festival. The main programme of the festival includes 14 films. Of them, seven works are the debuts of young film directors.

Among others, the main contest programme of the festival "Kinotavr" includes the Kantemir Balagov's film "Tesnota" (Squeeze). In May, the young film director from Nalchikwon the prize of the International Federation of Cinematographers in the second most important contest programme of the Cannes Film Festival "The Special View".

"This year, the regional trend became more pronounced. For the first time, we got so many independent works from young film directors from Biysk, Yekaterinburg, and Volgograd... That fact even surprised us," noted Sitora Alieva, the programme director, as quoted by the "Izvestia".

Out of 14 films, nine are independent projects shot without support from the state or large film studios.
