ECtHR awards compensation of 19,500 euros for torture at North-Ossetian police
Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled on the case of unlawful detention and beating up of Sultan Barakhoev, a resident of North Ossetia, by policemen. His mother was awarded 19,500 euros as compensation.
According to the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", on January 10, 2007, several policemen brought Sultan Barakhoev to a police station, where they beat him up, "while shouting insults against the Ingush people." In the same month, they opened a criminal case against Barakhoev on suspicion of possessing weapons, which was stopped in February 2007.
The ECtHR's decision on the case of Sultan Barakhoev's unlawful detention and beating recognizes the fact of violating by Russia of several articles of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). The judges of the ECtHR have established that "in relation to the applicant the following articles of the ECHR were violated: Article 3: the prohibition of torture and cruel treatment; and Article 5: the right to liberty and security," says the release of the HRC "Memorial", received by the "Caucasian Knot" in the evening on January 17.
