UN special rapporteur to visit Chechnya

Special Rapporteur on violence against women of the UN Commission on Human Rights Yakin Erturk is expected to arrive in Chechnya within the next few days, a Chechen government official told the Caucasian Knot correspondent. "It is planned that Ms Erturk will meet with President of Chechnya Alu Alkhanov to discuss the observance of human rights and freedoms on the territory of Chechnya. Besides, she will meet with Lema Khasuyev, envoy for human rights in the republic. Ms Erturk is also expected to visit places of compact residence of displaced persons in the town of Grozny," the source said. After her visit to Chechnya, Yakin Erturk will draw up a report and present it at the spring 2005 session of the UN Commission for Human Rights.
