South-Ossetian authorities decide to close border with Georgia for New Year

On December 31, the South-Ossetian-Georgian border will be closed for 24 hours in the context of the pre-holiday enhanced security measures, said the KGB of South Ossetia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that, according to law enforcement officials of South Ossetia, in 2016, 549 persons were detained for breaching the border with Georgia. More than a hundred of them were Georgian citizens.

"The traffic through the checkpoints will resume as usual at 7:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. Moscow time) on January 1," said the spokesman of the Frontier Department of the KGB of South Ossetia.

The South-Ossetian MIA has also announced a switchover to the strengthened service mode on the New Year's holidays. "600 our employees will guard public order, paying special attention to places of mass celebrations," said the MIA.
