Organizers of "Kunaki" festival see their aim in cinema revival in Caucasus

On November 19-24, Sukhumi will host the "Kunaki" film festival. It is designed to help film makers from the Caucasus to enter the world level and to contribute to the revival of cinema in the region. This was announced by organizers of the film festival.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the 10th North-Caucasian Open Film and TV Festival "Kunaki" received 267 works.

The festival got its name from the ancient Caucasian concept of "kunaki", meaning hospitality and friendship between people of different nationalities and religions.

At a briefing held at the Sukhumi Military Glory Museum, Vladimir Zantariya, the chairman of the festival organizing committee, noted the positive tendencies in the sphere of culture between Russia and Abkhazia.

In total, in 2016, the festival received a record number of the applications submitted. According to Ilyas Bogatyryov, the director of the festival, there were only two basic criteria for selection, including artistic value of a film and its content.

The balance between novice Caucasian film makers and their more experienced colleagues is essential for the revival of cinema in Northern Caucasus, which is the main purpose of the "Kunaki" festival. This opinion was voiced by Sulieta Kusova-Chukho, the president of the festival.

She has also expressed her hope that Abkhazia will be able to become a centre of culture, in which the entire Caucasus will find its own model of the future.
