Authorities seek closure of independent newspaper

Timur Aliyev, editor of the independent newspaper Chechen Society, was summoned to the Organized Crime Unit of the Ingush Interior Ministry in the morning today.

As Timur Aliyev told the Caucasian Knot correspondent, this summons was caused by the bid made by the Chechen Interior Ministry to the Ingush Interior Ministry to stop the publication of the Chechen Society newspaper. "They showed me copies of numbers of our newspaper and told these materials were "undesirable" and even "antistate" by nature. Meanwhile many of our articles are really antiwar by nature. We "differ" from other newspapers only in objectivity and reliability. We act completely within the limits of the law. It is really difficult for a newspaper to be unbiased in the modern world," Mr Aliyev said. The chances that the Chechen Society will be closed are very high.
