Armenian court leaves Gevorg Safaryan behind bars
In Armenia, the Court of Appeal (CoA) has upheld the decision to arrest the activist Gevorg Safaryan, who is accused of using violence against an authority.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 10 the CoA postponed the announcement of the decision on the appeal complaint lodged by the defence of Safaryan.
Gevorg Safaryan, a supporter of the National Salvation Front "New Armenia", was detained on December 31, 2015, during the conflict with the police in Freedom Square in Yerevan. On January 3, the court arrested the activist for two months.
According to Tigran Airapetyan, an activist's advocate, the court also refused to grant the defence's petition to release Safaryan on bail.
"The court failed to give a single justification for its decision," said Airapetyan.
The judgement of the CoA has angered the crowd of about two dozens of supporters of Safaryan, who pelted the courthouse with eggs as a sign of protest. At the same time, the police detained Gagik Egiazaryan, one of the active members of the "New Armenia".
