Kadyrov delivers ultimatum to rebels

Ramzan Kadyrov, the son of the late president of Chechnya, Akhmat Kadyrov, demanded on June 7 that Chechen rebels lay down arms within three days. The former head of his father's security service claimed that separatists who would not give themselves up within three days would be mercilessly destroyed. The speech by Deputy Prime Minister of the Chechen Government Ramzan Kadyrov was broadcast by the local television.

"We can't stand the terror against the civilian population endlessly. We can't stay in cold blood when we see how civilians die. It can't last endlessly," Mr Kadyrov said. "You (rebels) have had an opportunity to come to law enforcement agencies, lay down arms, and start peaceful life again for a long time. If you have refused to do it, it means it is your deliberate choice, and you leave us no other way except to destroy you."

Detachment commanders of the Chechen president's security service were in the studio along with Ramzan Kadyrov.
