Murder attempt on public activist

Valentina Vostroknutova, a former officer of law enforcement agencies, having retired on a pension, took up human rights activities representing in courts of law various people disputing with government. Last case Valentina Vostroknutova was working on was the nonpayment of compensations to victims of a natural disaster in the Maiskii district, Kabardino-Balkaria, in the summer of 2002. She was shot while entering the house where she lived. Doctors extracted three bullets from Vostroknutova's body. She is currently in the resuscitation unit of a hospital in Nalchik. The doctors estimate her condition as grave.
