Verdict to Azerbaijani opposition activist Abdullaev appealed against

The defence intends to achieve acquittal of Elvin Abdullaev, a member of the youth committee of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), sentenced to six years in prison on charges of illegal drug dealing.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 1, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Elvin Abdullaev to six years in prison on charges of illegal drug dealing. At the trial, Abdullaev refused to plead guilty. His advocate stated disagreement with the guilty verdict and intent to appeal against it.

According to Ali Mekhtiev, Abdullaev's advocate, the investigation was carried out with gross procedural violations. The defence has 20 days to challenge the verdict, the advocate told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today.

"We coped with the deadline; and at the end of last week filed an appeal," he said, noting that the defence strives for complete acquittal of the activist. In the opinion of the advocate, the first instance court failed to prove Elvin Abdullaev's guilt.
